Creating Your Own Custom Heirloom Nativity
Creating a custom nativity scene as a family heirloom is a wonderful idea and the basis for enduring family traditions! Here are some specific ideas that we incorporate here at Navidad Nativities that can help YOU design something unique and lasting:
1. Materials and Craftsmanship
  • Handcrafted Wood: Consider sourcing locally sourced wood, like pine or cedar, to create a memorable stable. We usually use a solid base of either MDF or fine wood.
And our stable/building settings are made from plank balsa wood that can easily be
cut and carved, then stained or painted.  Even the rock bases are carved balsa.
  • Figures: If you have a collection of figures from family, or travels, build your
stable around the Holy Family first and foremost.  Include the traditional ox
and donkey, and some sheep, for a very pastoral setting.
If you are looking to purchase figures, check out all our offerings at
www.navidadnativities.com and click on the Heirloom Figures tab.
4.72” figure (12 cm) figures are a great size to work with.

2. Personalization

• Engraving: Consider engraving the family name or a significant date on the base of the nativity scene.

3. Artistic Style
  • Traditional vs. Modern: Decide if you want a classic depiction or a more contemporary, abstract style.  Our most popular designs are based on a barn type stable, or a building that you would have found in Judea at the time of the birth.
For inspiration on different designs, click on the ABOUT tab at www.navidadnativities.com….then the VIEW PORTFOLIO tab.
  • Cultural Influences: Integrate elements from your family’s cultural background, whether through colors, patterns, or symbols.
4. Size and Display
  • Custom Size: Create a size that fits your space—whether it’s a small tabletop piece or a larger display for the living room. Mantles, dining room sideboards, deep windows seats/sills all provide good display space.
5. Legacy Elements
  • Story Cards: Include cards that tell the story of each figure and its significance to your family.
  • Generational Additions: Leave space for future family members to add their own touches or figures, making it a collaborative heirloom.
7. Lighting and Atmosphere
  • Soft Lighting: Incorporate LED lights or a small lantern to create a warm, inviting glow around the scene. For easy to use LED lighting, visit www.woodlandscenics.com
and check out the LED and nano lights, hubs and power packs.
  • Natural Elements: Add dried natiural element or greenery to enhance the aesthetic and connect with nature.  A full line of ground covers, grasses and more can be found at www.woodlandscenics.com
